FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What is cork?
Cork is made from the bark of the cork oak tree, the (Quercus suber) originating in the Mediterranean Sea area. The most notable is Portugal, which is involved in 52% of the world's production of cork. Why is cork considered a natural product?
Cork is harvested from the cork oak tree and retains its natural properties regardless of processing. How are cork tiles processed?
The bark is stripped from the tree and then stacked into piles and left to “season” in the field for one year. The seasoned bark is then tied together and boiled. This flattens the bark so that it can be easily processed. Once cooled, the cork is sorted according to quality for various uses. How does the manufacturing of floor cork differ from that of wall cork?
Wall and floor cork are both made from cork bark. Ground and pressed cork is almost always used as backing and is pressed with less pressure. Floor cork is pressed with 300 to 500 kilograms per m3 while most wall cork tile is pressed with 50 to 150 kilograms per m3 or not pressed at all. Why is cork considered a sustainable and environmentally friendly product?
Cork is harvested from the bark of mature (minimum 25 year old) cork oak trees. The process of debarking the tree does not harm the tree which will continue to grow and produce another crop of cork in nine to ten years. The industry is highly regulated to ensure each tree survives. In addition, the manufacturing process for cork flooring uses significantly less carbon than many other popular flooring options. This makes cork a great green flooring option. Is cork resistant to extreme temperatures?
Cork is temperature resistant from -180 to +110 degrees Celcius Is cork flammable?
Cork is naturally fire resistant. Suberin, a waxy substance found in cork, is resistant to fire. Cork trees have been known to survive wildfires with minimal damage. Is cork waterproof?
Cork is naturally waterproof...think of the cork used in wine bottles ;) |
Which areas of my home are best suited for cork flooring?
Cork is naturally suitable for all areas of the house; especially kitchens, bathrooms and entry areas where moisture could pose a problem for other floor coverings. Does cork insulate?
Cork is made up of millions of tiny air-filled bubbles. Those tiny bubble help to insulate and reduce transmission of heat into a room in the summer or out of a room in the winter. A cork floor has an R-value of 1.125, ceramic tile is rated 0.250 and oak comes in at 0.638. Only wool carpet offers an R-value greater than cork. Is cork sound proof?
Millions of tiny air bubbles inside cork create a barrier against noise. Sound is muffled and acoustics in the room are improved. A room floored with cork will reduce noise from being transmitted through the floor to the ceiling below. Why is cork flooring considered hygienic?
Cork is anti-static, it doesn't attract dust. It's anti-static properties make it ideal for computer rooms and cleaning is simple with just a damp mop. How can a cork floor be both durable and pliable?
Cork undergoes intense pressure during the manufacturing process making it impact resistant. Thanks to its resilient cells it remains pliable and it's durability is improved by applying a finish that is specifically manufactured for cork floors. Is cork mass produced with repeated designs?
Cork is a natural product with varying shades, so no two pieces are identical. How is cork installed?
Installing cork tiles is quite simple since most tile products have a self-adhesive back—installation is a simple peel-and-stick operation. When individual tiles become damaged, you can simply lift them up and replace them. Other products are installed with a thin adhesive and then finished with several layers of sealer. |
